Manaye, Asnake; Hayelom, Lensa
Following unprecedented aggressive effect of contemporary media on students, the researchers
proposed a study entitled “Contemporary Exposure of Social Media and Its Relationship with
Students Academic Result”. It was not as such known to what magnitude students are vulnerable
and their academic result is impacted whether negatively or positively.Thereby both qualitative
and quantitative approach and formulating descriptive survey design was used. Questionnaire
and interview are the major tools used to collect data. To do so from the total consciously
speculated 13000 populations 374 of them have been involved via questionnaire; 12 (saturated)
school principals have been interviewed; this indeed helped the researcher triangulate the datum
from multiple techniques. As a result, it is discovered that students are highly exposed to social
media utilization and in a return their academic result is seriously affected. Students who use
social media extended hours, the less they score grades. Contrarily, students who spend fewer
hours are best scorer of academic result. Besides it is proved that there is negative significant
relationship between social media utilization and academic excellence. Moreover, the
consciousness of students towards social media customization seemed to have been corrupted.
Consequently, based on the finding it is suggested that shared responsibility is needed. Since
students are lagging back comprehending the tricks of social media, courses such as
media/information literacy should be introduced in the curriculum. Again, regular and surprises
supervision is recommended. Parents have central role in paving the future of their students;
thus they don‟t depart themselves in examining the day to day scheme of their pupils. In addition
to that, triangular (teachers, parents, students and executive bodies need to be establish a
common counsel that address the delinquency of students.
