Desire for children rapidly changing among reproductive women in sub-Saharan Africa including Ethiopia since advancement of antiretroviral therapy. However, knowledge about determinants of desire for children among women living with HIV are currently limited in the study area. Thus, this study aim to fill these knowledge gap.
Objectives: -To assess determinants of desire for children among women living with HIV in Mizan Aman town public health facilities, South west Ethiopia.2020
Methods: -The design of the study was carried out using an institution-based unmatched case control method. It was conducted in two health facilities in Mizan Aman town from January 1, 2020, to March 30, 2020. A total of 454 (227 cases and 227 controls) individuals were selected for the study using systematic random sampling. Data was gathered using a face-to-face interview using a pretested questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify candidate and independent determinants of fertility desire, respectively. Independent determinants associated with fertility desire were declared using AORs with their corresponding 95% CIs at P value < 0.05 cutoff point.
Results : Determinants independently associated with the desire for children were age categories of 25-29 years (AOR =4.29, 2.01-9.14) , Educational level primary (AOR=2.79, 1.46- 5.35), secondary (AOR= 6.84, 2.48- 18.91) , tertiary and above (AOR= 6.47, 1.74- 24.01), above two children (AOR=0.10 , 0.03- 0.26) , who had sexual intercourse within 12 months (AOR=4.42, 2.21- 9.04), Partners desire (AOR= 11.11 , 5.19- 33.03) were independent predictors of desire for children.
Conclusion A desire to have children among WLHI is significantly associated with age, educational level, previous sexual intercourse, partner desire and number of children.
